IAP strongly condemns the severe and escalating violence by the military junta against civil society in Myanmar since the coup on February 1st.

We stand in solidarity and support with our community and civil society partners who are experiencing brutality at the hands of the Tatmadaw, and are being targeted for their work to promote and protect fundamental rights and freedoms. We stand in solidarity and support with the people of Myanmar who are peacefully protesting for the return of power to their elected government and fighting for their right to determine the future of their country.

We condemn the…

For 5 years, IAP has asked, What if development were designed and lived by the same people?

As a 19-year old activist, I remember a mentor asking me what felt, at the time, like an equally provocative question. After participating in repeated protests against a racist and anti-immigrant radio program in the US, I was becoming frustrated that we weren’t able to get the show off the air. My mentor asked, “Everyone knows now what you’re fighting against, but what are you fighting for?”

This question stuck with me.

Like the question from my mentor, IAP’s ‘What if?’ question prompts…

FMO — the Dutch development bank — is relying on an access to information system with serious flaws.

In 2020, International Accountability Project (IAP) and FUNDEPS analyzed the disclosure practices of FMO, the Dutch development bank. We found serious shortcomings in FMO’s current access to information system. Out of a dataset of 241 projects disclosed from January 1, 2019 through May 31, 2020 on FMO’s website, our key findings revealed that:

  • Despite investing heavily in non-English speaking contexts, 0% of projects disclosed included translations of basic or technical project information;
  • 0% of projects disclosed technical documents, including…

Amsterdam — February 10, 2021

The Dutch development bank FMO is not sufficiently transparent about the projects it finances and is therefore acting contrary to its mandate.

This is evident from a new report published by the International Accountability Project (IAP) and the Foundation for the Development of Sustainable Policies (FUNDEPS), endorsed by 28 organizations including Both ENDS, SOMO, and Oxfam Novib. The research assesses FMO’s disclosure and access to information practices for investments proposed between January 1, 2019, and May 31, 2020. …

An update on IAP’s Global Advocacy Team — our plans for 2021–2023

For every development initiative, people should be at the center as active participants and beneficiaries of the right to development. This is well corroborated by Jessica, a Community Organizer from Manila, the Philippines who notes: “We understand the need to have our own plan and solutions to the issues confronting our community.”

The first Global Advocacy Team comprised of 8 community organizers from 8 communities. Clockwise, Left to Right: Sek Sokunroth (Cambodia); Jessica Amon (Philippines); Mohamed Abdel Azim (Egypt); Sukhgerel Dungersuren (Mongolia); Bernadino Morales Tera (Panama); Moon Nay Li (Burma); Jamil Junejo (Pakistan) and Mela Chiponda (Zimbabwe).

As we wrote earlier this year, Jessica was part of the International Accountability Project’s first Global Advocacy Team Initiative which brought together 8 people from 8 countries to conduct local research and present policy proposals to change how development is done. The Team’s community-led research documented personal experiences…
